The photographs below show the a replica of the audio oscillator used in the 1939 Beam Ray machine. This is also the design that launched the Hewlett-Packard company. Note that with the settings defined by Aubrey Scoon, the audio oscillator is overdriven to produce a square wave. So perhaps, a square wave  was actually in use from the late 1930's onwards.
